Arizona summers are hard on most of us. But for women and children experiencing homelessness, the heat isn’t just uncomfortable. It can be life threatening.
This summer, women have come through our doors carrying more than the weight of the heat. They’re carrying difficult situations too. Some are facing unstable housing, the loss of a job, family conflict, or abuse. They don’t just need relief from the heat. They need someone to walk beside them during their crisis.
That’s exactly what Jacqueline needed.

Jacqueline’s Story: Facing Homelessness in the Arizona Heat
Jacqueline was five months pregnant and sleeping outside with her 10-year-old son. Every day, she tried to survive the heat.
Jacqueline and her son were living on the street. As she searched for a safe place to stay, she found that shelter options were limited. Weeks of searching went by with no progress. She felt so alone and discouraged.
That’s when Jacqueline found Hope Women’s Center. At one of our Hope on the Road mobile sites, she began regularly meeting with our staff and taking steps toward safety and stability. She didn’t have to face her crisis alone anymore. Our team gave her support, encouragement, and links to local housing resources.
Why Arizona’s Summer Heat Is So Dangerous
Arizona summers can bring over 100 days in a row of 100 degree heat. For a woman already facing a crisis, the extreme heat adds even more stress. It’s even harder when she’s also caring for her kids.
Last year in Arizona, 427 people died from the heat. Almost half of them were experiencing homelessness. During the summer months, women already facing a crisis have to also navigate dangerous heat while trying to keep themselves and their children safe.

Relief from the heat matters. But it’s not the whole story. Women like Jacqueline need someone to walk alongside them, someone who will offer real support and connect them to the resources they need.
